Lack of Access to Dental Care Derailed My Career

Shaena M., a cosmetologist and mother of three, started noticing changes in her teeth and oral health between her first and second pregnancies. She had always taken very good care of her teeth, getting regular cleanings and staying on top of things. During her second pregnancy she started experiencing swelling of her gums so severe that she could barely chew or talk. Her dentist told her nothing could be done, leaving her feeling terrible. Shaena's final pregnancy was high-risk and led to tremendous dental pain. Again, her providers did not respond to her oral health complaints.

Beyond the excruciating tooth pain she experienced, Shaena also struggled to find an dental provider who accepts Medicaid. One dentist she consulted said there was nothing they could do without a deep cleaning first. Medicaid does not cover deep cleanings, and the out-of-pocket cost would be nearly $4,000. For Shaena, the expense was not feasible.

Shaena shares that she feels uncomfortable and self-conscious working in the beauty and make-up industry. “I don’t feel like my teeth and gums are a reflection of a profession where how you look matters.” She feels judged because of the condition of her gums and teeth, so after working in the beauty industry for over two decades, she’s now taking steps toward a career change.

Despite the career challenges she faces, Shaena is using her experience to raise awareness of the importance of perinatal oral health care and the need for increased dental access in Florida. Before her own experience, Shaena had no idea the effect pregnancy can have on oral health. “The community needs to be aware of the importance of having healthy teeth and how it affects many aspects of your life; your job, confidence and self-esteem. Women particularly need to be aware of how pregnancy can impact your oral health.” For adults over 21 like Shaena, Florida Medicaid only covers emergency dental services to alleviate pain or infection. Lack of access to preventative care and basic treatments put the health and livelihoods of thousands of Floridians at risk.
